Calgary-based NERVE 2024 company brings brain-computer interface technology to everyday life
Possibility Neurotechnologies has launched Think2Switch™, a mobile app that enables people to control devices and interact with their environment using only their thoughts, with no physical movement or voice input required.
The app, now available on the Apple App Store, pairs with consumer EEG headbands to detect and interpret brainwave signals in real time, translating them into commands that let users interact with apps on Apple devices or control smart home integrations. Think2Switch™ is designed for use in everyday settings: homes, classrooms, and community environments.
Possibility Neurotechnologies is an OBI portfolio company through the NERVE 2024 program, which supports early-stage neurotech ventures through funding, mentorship, and commercialization expertise.
Developed alongside the people who need it most
Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology has existed for decades, but has remained largely inaccessible outside of clinical and research settings. Think2Switch™ was developed in partnership with children and individuals facing significant barriers to interaction, including more than 150 families worldwide who participated as early adopters, with the goal of making BCI usable without specialized training or dedicated support.
The app can be set up by teachers, parents, caregivers, or peers, enabling consistent, self-directed use in situations where many existing assistive technologies are difficult to implement.
"This is everyday technology, designed so people can interact with the world using their thoughts," said Dr. Dion Kelly, Co-Founder & CEO of Possibility Neurotechnologies. "We've developed it in partnership with children and individuals facing significant barriers to interaction, so that it works for everyone. What matters most is what it enables: people can make choices, express themselves, and take part in everyday moments in ways that weren't possible before."
A window into what Think2Switch™ makes possible
Among the early adopters is Claire, a child who has been using BCI technology since the age of three. Claire, who cannot speak or move her arms and legs freely, uses Think2Switch™ at school each day to choose library books, select colours for art projects, and make independent choices throughout her day. In some cases, her classmates help set up the system.
"They told her to think, 'go,' and she turned a light on," said Stephanie Sonnenberg, Claire's mother. "I just knew at that moment that a door had opened for Claire. It was something exciting that would change her life. For the first time, I thought of milestones instead of inch stones."
A recently released video follows Claire as she uses Think2Switch™ to create art with her brother, producing colourful splatters across a canvas using only her thoughts, capturing the kind of spontaneous, connected moments the technology is designed to enable.
Availability and pricing
Think2Switch™ is available now for download on the Apple App Store. New users receive a free first month, followed by a $35/month subscription. The app currently works with select consumer EEG headbands, including the Muse Athena, which is available with an exclusive 15% discount at choosemuse.com/possneuro. Additional device compatibility is being added over time.
