OBI Public Talks 2024-25

At OBI, knowledge translation is one of the key steps in bringing science and innovation back to the community.

We are always looking for ways to move lab experiments, clinical trials, and treatments beyond academic forums, and one such way is to speak directly to the public and engage them in the exciting advances that are happening in brain health.

Join our OBI Public Talk Series: Supporting Brain Health Across the Lifespan

Join us for a lifetime of brain knowledge in three talks. From birth to adulthood to your older years, learn about the brain at each stage of life and how to maintain brain health as you age. Hear from our panel of experts in brain research, commercialization and care who will shed light on and share experiences about brain health.

1. Nurturing the Developing Brain

Much of what we know about a typically developing brain comes from research into brain disorders. This talk will feature what we know about the trajectory of brain development (0 to 25 years) from neurodevelopmental disorders and mental health conditions. Our panel of experts will also highlight ways in which we can help children and youth maintain a healthy brain and balanced well-being.

2. Optimizing the Adult Brain

Research shows that the brain continues to grow and change in adulthood (25 to 65 years), especially through neuro-engagement or effort-based learning. This talk will explore how to establish good brain health habits through environment and behaviour, which regulate brain function and structure and can protect or repair brain damage and disease.

3. Supporting the Elder Brain

We know our brain won’t be the same at 80 years old as it is at 40. This talk will illustrate what is ‘normal’ aging in those 65 years and older, versus when medical attention may be needed. Our panel of experts will also explore how neuroplasticity can be an effective tool for mitigating cognitive decline or potential diseases.
